How to Study Math
- IN CLASS
- Come to class prepared.
- Know which problems you have questions about from the previous night's homework and ASK THEM!!!
- Study your notes right after you take them and make sure they make sense TO YOU.
- Keep your notes titled and dated so they are easy to refer to later.
- Write down things your teacher says that make sense to you EVEN if she doesn't write it on the board.
- ASK, ASK, ASK! No question is unimportant when it comes to YOU understanding what is going on.
- FROM THE TEXTBOOK
- Read word for word. Details are very important in math!
- When you read a definition, STOP and ask yourself if you can think of an example.
- Work through examples on your own paper, step-by-step and then check in the book.
- Do the homework assigned EVERY DAY!
- If you get stuck on a homework problem. look for an example like the problem you are working. If you can't find one, skip the problem and go on to others. Then come back to the one you were stuck on and try it again. Sometimes if you take a short break and come back to it, you will figure it out.
- PREPARING FOR AN EXAM
- Be sure you know which sections or handouts your test will cover.
- Begin studying a few days BEFORE the test.
- Go see your teacher for extra help.
- Make a list of all definitions and formulas and make sure you know how to use them.
- TAKING AN EXAM
- Briefly glance over the entire test. Do all the problems you know how to do first.
- Work steadily and carefully. Do not spend too much time on one problem.
