PowerPoint Toolbars
Purpose:  To familiarize yourself with the buttons on the toolbars.
1.
First, make sure that the proper toolbars are visible on the screen.  Place the cursor on the top or bottom toolbar and click the right button of the mouse.  The toolbars that are currently open will be checked.  Check Standard, Formatting, and Drawing if they are not checked yet.

The Microsoft Word toolbar is similar to the top toolbar and you can click here for explanation of buttons not mentioned below.
Toolbar at the Top of the Screen

Description
New Slide

Inserts a new slide into the presentation after the current one.
Bullets

Creates a bulleted list.  First, click the button and the first bullet will appear.  After completing the first item, click the enter key and the second bullet will automatically appear.
Toolbar at the Bottom of the Screen
Normal View

When this button is selected, you will see the text on the left and the slide on the right.
Outline View

When selected, this view shows only the text of your presentation in outline form.
Slide View

When selected, this view shows just the slides.
Slide Sorter

Clicking on this button will change the view to seeing all the slides on the screen.  You can then click on a slide and drag it to a new location in your presentation.
View Show

Select this button to view the presentation.  It will begin with the current slide you are working on.
AutoShapes

By clicking on the arrow beside AutoShapes, you can insert various shapes, such as flowcharts, arrows, stars, hearts, smiley faces, or clouds.
Line

Clicking on this button allows you to draw a line on your presentation.
Arrow

With this button, you can draw an arrow on your presentation.
Rectangle

This allows you to drag and draw a rectangle.  After placing the rectangle, you can double click on it to change the fill color and outline color.
Oval

With this button, you can drag and draw an oval that can be changed if you double click on it.
Text Box

After clicking on this button, drag with the mouse to create a text box and then click with the mouse in the box to add text.
Insert WordArt

This button permits you to display text in interesting shapes and colors.  It works well for titles.  It is an option available in Microsoft Word, too, so click here, and begin with step two after clicking the icon on your screen.
Insert Clip Art

Click this button and then drag with the mouse where you want to place a graphic.  The clip art gallery will then appear. Click here for a tutorial on inserting clip art.
Fill Color

This button will color the background of text boxes and shapes, but not the entire background of a slide.
Line Color

After using the Line button, you can change the color of the line with this button.  This button also works to make changes to borders around pictures and text boxes
Font Color

This button allows you to quickly change the font color of a text box.  Simply click on the text box, then the Font Color button, and click the new color.
Line Style

This button allows you to change the thickness and style of a line.  First, use the Line button to draw a line and then click on the Line Style button to make your choice.  This button also works to make changes to borders around pictures and text boxes.
Dash Style

This button changes the styles of lines to from one continous line to dashed styles.
Arrow Style

After drawing an arrow, this button permits you to change the style of the arrow.
Shadow Style

This button adds shadows to shapes but not to text.
3-D Style

This button changes shapes to look three-dimensional.
