Formatting Headers and Footers

Purpose:
To have repeating text at the top or bottom of every page in a document.  For example, for your English paper written in MLA style, you must have your last name appear in the header of every page.

1.   Click on View and then Header and Footer.  Once you click, the header box will appear as shown in the second graphic.

.

2.   Currently what you type will align to the left.  For your English paper, your last name must be aligned right, so click on the circled button of the taskbar shown below.

3.   Type your text.

4.   Click Close on the Header and Footer dialog box. The Header will be grayed out, but it will print out normally.  Every page will have your last name in the header.

5.   If you want a text in the footer, click on View and then Header and Footer as you did before. Then click on the Switch between Header and Footer icon.

6.   The Footer is at the bottom of the page. Align the text where you would like it to appear as you did in step 2. Type what text you like to appear on each page. Click Close.  The Footer will be grayed out, but it will print out normally.
